GNo-IP Updater v1.4.1 Dynamic DNS Client.

What does this software do?

GNo-IP Updater works in conjunction with the No-IP.com dynamic dns service. No-IP provides static dns names for dynamic ip addresses. Dynamic DNS is a perfect application for anyone wanting to run a server on their home computer connected to the internet via dialup, cable, or dsl. This client program runs in the background and detects when your IP changes dynamically. As your IP changes the GNo-IP updater communicates with No-IP's DNS servers and update your free No-IP.com DNS record. Using the Gno-IP updater eliminates the need to logon to No-IP's website and enter the new IP when it changes.

Why do I want to use this?

Having a DNS name associated to your computer, you will be able to access it from anywhere. You can host your own webpage from your home PC. You can grab files off your ftp server from home while at work. Run PC Anywhere or VNC to remotley configure and use your computer. All of these types of services can be accessed easily by just entering a short and personl hostname instead of a hard to remember IP address. Remember when running these services you become the system administrator and take responsiblity for keeping your system secure.

How do I set it up?

First you need to create an account at no-ip.com. Visit http://www.no-ip.com/newUser.php to set up an account now. If you want to use your own domain name you may want to consider No-IP+ (http://www.no-ip.com/services.php). Once you complete the registration process you will receive your password via email. After logging in, click on the Hostname Factory link on the upper left hand side. Click ôAdd a hostö. Enter in the hostname and domain you wish to use. After you have successfully added a hostname you are ready to use this software.

Installing the software

Gno-IP Update comes in two parts, NOIPUpdater and GNService. NoIPUpdater is the main program that you will be dealing with. GNService is the Windows NT service for users running NT. NT users see the Advanced Users section regarding configuration.

Getting Started:

1.       In order to use the client you must first create an account with no-ip.com.

2.       Configure GNo-IP Updater. Click on the NOIPUpdater icon. Click on the general tab. Enter your email address and password that you used when signing up at No-IP.com's website. Click 'Set/Save Settings'

3.       Click on Hostnames tab. Click the 'New' button. You will be prompted with a dialog box. Enter in the hostname and pull down the box to select the domain name. If you are a No-IP+ user your domain name will be in the list of available domains. Now click 'OK'. (Note: The hostname must exist on the website before you can update them with this software)

4.       You should now notice a hostname in the list of hosts. Notice the status. If everything is working properly you should see 'IP is Current'. If you have another status message please go to the troubleshooting section.

5.       If everything is working correctly, minimize the application and the client will continually check for a change in your IP address.

Advanced Users:

NT Service
The GNo-IP Updater has the option to be run as a NT Service. The GNServeice.exe file must be in the same folder/directory as NOIPUpdater.exe. To configure the NT Service Select the "General" tab on the NOIPUpdater application. Check the "Run As System Service On Startup" check box. Check set/save settings then restart your computer. You will only need to use NOIPUpdater to configure changes to your options for the NT Service configuration (i.e. add more hosts, change password, etc.)

Address Resolution
This tab is used to toggle using your local IP address and WAN address. This is of interest to you if youÆre behind a firewall/router such as a LinkSys Cable/DSL router or using some type of Internet connection sharing software/hardware. Using your Router/Gateway address forces the client to use the WAN IP address, the IP address that is visible on the Internet. Click the "Use Router/Gateway address" option and select an interval at which you want to check for changes in your IP. No-IP suggests every 15-30 minutes. Make sure to click "Set/Savings Settings".

Proxy Configuration:
The Proxy tab is used for configuring settings if you connect through a proxy server. Enter the proxy information here. Remember to click "Set/Save Settings" when done.

Upgrading from version 1.1

It is suggested that you delete your "options.dat" file first before running v1.3

Troubleshooting section:

Q: Is the No-IP Updater compatible with a LinkSys Cable/DSL Router?
A: Yes, you need to check "Use Router/Gateway Address" under Address resolution.

Q: The client says my IP is current but it still goes to the old IP.
A: DNS can take up to 5 minutes for the changes to propagate. Your computer also may be caching an old IP for that host.

Q: I am a No-IP Plus user, how do I update mydomain.com?
A: When you update www.mydomain.com, mydomain.com is updated as well.

Q: I didnÆt find an answer to my question who can I contact?
A: You can check No-IP.com's website for client help, or contact support@no-ip.com
